Vision
We envision a world where power is brought back into the hands of the people, where food is locally grown, and healers are nurtured in all corners of neighborhoods. We envision a world where urban spaces are sprinkled with native and edible plants, and where the traditions of the native people whose land we all reside, are able to flourish. We envision a world where people are not afraid of their governing structures.
Values
Ancestral Practices Light Our Way Forward
The blessings and protocols of our ancestors are embedded in our flow and programs. Ceremonial practices are cultural revitalization and are honored here.
For us, by us
We represent ourselves and our communities. Our constituents, board, and staff are inter-dependant and not isolated from each other.
Prioritizing Gender and Sexuality Expansion
Since we use a for-us-by-us model, we inherently uplift gender and sexuality expansion. Queer communities are integral to the biodiversity of our societies and planet so it is our priority to see them/us thrive.
Small by Design
Our work and networks are relational. Trust takes time and Lachiwana grows slowly, no matter the funding. We find small and potent has the most impact on communities. Our relations are our greatest asset.
Long-Term Health and Sustainability
Quality of life is our organizational culture. We prioritize the well-being of our staff, board and constituents. As such, we aim for livable wages and compensation, a radical time off policy, and a seasonal harmonizing of workload.
Generative Conflict
Humans grow, movements take different shapes. People are not disposable, and we are more than the sum of our mistakes and successes. We believe that direct communication, acute self-awareness, and conversations are the way forward.
Gifts to Society
Artists, neurodivergent, disabled, and othered people are gifts to society. We compensate accordingly to honor the time and effort it takes to function in extractive economies.
Land Heals
We strive to be in right-relations with the natural world around and within us. As Queer, GNC, Trans, and POC people, it’s important that our programs are deeply connected to land.
